Dit werk is mede geïnspireerd op het prachtige boek Kruistocht door Drenthe, van Siemen Dijkstra. In het boek vertelt Jan van Ginkel over de Valtherbrug, een oude verbindingsroute. De veenbrug tussen Ter Apel en Valthe is voor de huidige jaartelling gebouwd. Het beeld links verwijst naar De Modderman; een ode aan de veenarbeider. Mijn voorouders. Ten tijde van de turfafgravingen deden moddermannen het vuilste werk. Dit bronzen beeld, gemaakt door Krien Clevis, stond eind vorige eeuw tussen Valthermond en 2e Exloërmond en keek in de richting van het Bargerveen, totdat het werd vernield. Op die plek staan nu windturbines.
